Retaining a Lawyer in Ontario
The number one consideration for people when
deciding whether to retain a lawyer is the cost.
Although legal fees can be expensive, a proper defence in court is
invaluable. Legal costs can range and depend on various
factors such as the complexity of the case, the time and effort required of the
lawyer, or the experience of the lawyer involved. Lawyers in
Ontario are highly trained and regulated by the
Law Society of Upper
Canada and are qualified to deal with the complexity of criminal
cases in a very unforgiving and stressful legal system.
The best way to determine whether you wish to retain a lawyer is to
call and schedule a meeting to discuss your case. Most
criminal defence lawyers, including myself, will provide an initial meeting at no
cost where you will be provided with an estimate on fees and a
general overview of possible outcomes and expectations for your
case.
If you cannot afford a lawyer, some lawyers accept Legal Aid
certificates. Contact Legal Aid Ontario at the following link
to see if you qualify for assistance:

For cases in Greater Toronto, I will accept Legal Aid certificates
for most criminal offences. For more serious cases such as homicide,
criminal organizations, or trials expected to take longer than
several weeks, I will also accept Legal Aid outside of the Toronto
area.
